Dear My Brothers and Sisters Across the World
Allow me to introduce my self, my name is Taufik Hidayat, I am a lecturer and social activist. I want to share my current condition in Indonesia and asking you to support our struggle to make Indonesia become a better country with fair democracy, freedom of fear and tyranny. I hope this letter come to you in full concerned and sympathy for our country. Our country has just held the general election for presidency and legislative seat on April 17th 2019. Unfortunately, before the election day, our fellow citizens in Malaysia have caught the cheating group inside store building cast thousands of the ballot papers illegally for certain legislative candidate and incumbent presidential candidate (this ballot is for oversea citizens that held before the H-day in Indonesia). Up to now, this case is only assumed to be a regular case and not taking seriously.
When the H-day of election was coming, the cheating cases happened with unprecedented records as our social media inundated with many videos and photos proving that cheating is on the show. Many ballot papers are already used to favor incumbent, thousands of polling station committee become partisan, many original ballot boxes have been burnt, lacking ballot papers caused many voters didn’t vote, hundreds of revealed patterned typos when entering the vote data into official election counting system which degrading the opponent candidate, many indicates unneutrality of bureaucracy and police forces, perhaps many other cheating cases are out of our sight. The cheating is widespread in all over the country as we can access through social media. The opponent have collected thousands of cheating evidences hoping that election supervisory agency (BAWASLU) will declare or issue the re-election statement to compensate the widespread cases of cheating but for me this expected re-election statement is like waiting the world princess to marry me. For your information, our country now combines the presidential and legislative race in one day and generated the enormous complexity. Parliament said, it is for efficiency reason but ironically the budget raising almost two times compare to previous election.
Sadly to say, Hundreds of our polling station committees have been deceased due to extreme fatigue during manual counting process that can be finished up two days without proper sleep and rest. This is a tragedy of humanity. Can you imagine, with the advanced of information and communication technology, we still use paper for casting the vote as we did 60 years ago. It doesn’t mean e-voting technology unavailable in our country, we have hundred of expertise and gurus with smartest brain on the planet for ICT fields, but I have heard the rumors that our certain elites gaining benefit if still using paper for casting the ballot because cheating can be done easily and manually with dozens of experience like switching the ballot box or illegally cast the vote before the election day whereas technology will have more guarantee for this free- cheating issue. They never come up with serious solution to use E-voting as a medium to cast the vote and trying to solve a very easy security issue compare to using primitive way like paper. The greedy of few has been blinded our country to become a country with modern system in casting the vote.
I can say that their deceased are the product of our ignorant and feudalism way of thinking. Those elites who still manage to maintain this stupidity are persons that responsible for this tragedy. I am sure if we use the e-voting system we can save their life and we can cut the budget at very efficient rate compare to now which already consumed budget totaling around 1.5 billion Dollars.
Maybe you don’t believe what I will say, for this moment, our ballot box has been made using cardboard and crazily they secure the top cover by using iron padlock imagining more secure feature, while funnily, I can crush it easily by sitting steadily on that box. The election comission told that cardboard will survive on the water stream but recently, hundreds of boxes have been broken caused by flood.
The worst of all, the election commission allows the insane/crazy persons have a right to cast the ballot. You know what they do when they enter the polling station, one of them has been managed to drink the marker ink from the bottle (ink for marking the thumb’s voters for not casting twice). I think this is a blasphemy to our common sense. The insanity triumphs and protesting voices assumed as disgust to the incumbent.
So, through this letter, I am begging you to raise the voice to make an international pressure and asking for fair, free and involving some independent international election observer monitoring the re-election day thus any result issued by the election comission conducted on April 17th ago is declared as unused. If the expected re-election running with fair, free and transparent, I am sure that both supporter will accept any result issued by the election commission. But if the re-election is not occurred, I am afraid our democracy system is in danger and our society would be fragile and we deposit a “time bomb” that can be exploded in any time. The worst of all, we will be at brink of civil war that can be affected regionally and internationally.
Your voice is important for us because our people is in danger of civil war if this cheating cases are not resolved. I Hope you can understand my urgent message and don’t let this message is left only on your phone. Make a pray for us to pass through this critical condition.
